Liberty Science Center
“Countdown To Reopening” Event A Huge Success
Jersey
City, NJ – October 4, 2006 -- It’s less than ten months to July, 2007 – the
month when Liberty Science Center will reopen its signature building to the
public following a 22-month renovation and expansion project, and today a
large crowd gathered to kick off the countdown to reopening.
Comprised of over 200 people including supporters, volunteers, VIP guests
and members of the media, the group in attendance enjoyed a program of
remarks by Joseph D. Williams, chairman emeritus of the Science Center
board, and from Dr. Emlyn Koster, president and CEO of Liberty Science
Center, followed by an opportunity to try out exhibition and program
prototypes along with some local school children.
Prototypes on display included the Graffiti Wall from the Communications
exhibition, an elevator activity from Skyscraper! Achievement and
Impact, the Global Microscope from the Jennifer A. Chalsty Center for
Science Learning and Teaching, a “critter tank” featuring animals from the
Hudson River from Our Hudson Home, a look at how breaking news in
science and technology will be presented in Breakthroughs, and
finally, Where are the Germs?, a hand washing activity with surprising
results from Infection Connection.
Some guests were also able to don hard hats and tour the construction site,
led by representatives of Skanska USA, the Center’s construction firm.
“The Countdown Event
was a great opportunity for the media and other guests to have a glimpse
into the future of the re-invented Liberty Science Center,” said Dr.
Koster. “Excitement about our reopening is clearly already at a high level,
and today’s guests will help us spread the word about the very different
approaches we will be taking in our new facility.”
Dr. Koster continued,
“The trustees and staff of Liberty Science Center gratefully acknowledge the
teamwork of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, EwingCole,
Skanska USA and Granary Associates. We also express our gratitude to all
those who have financially enabled this project, most notably the State of
New Jersey for its visionary leadership role, and an array of other partners
from across public and private sector sources.”
