October 12, 1998 may be a long way off, but there
is a group of high-powered New Jersey and New York business and government officials
already setting their sights on Columbus Day when civilizations most famous
navigator will join Lady Liberty in the harbor spotlight. The Christopher
Columbus Monument Committee (CCMC) today announced plans to unveil a dramatic
6-story, sail shaped, bronze monument in Liberty State Park in Jersey City as a tribute to
Columbus, and to serve as a constant reminder of the significant role New Jersey and New
York City played in the nations immigration history. The spectacular monument will be
erected permanently in the park, across from Liberty and Ellis Islands on the weekend
leading to the national holiday honoring Columbus.

A CCMC spokesman said the monument - :LaVela di Columbo" (The Sail
of Columbus, by renowned Italian Gino Giannetti is a gift to the U. S. from the
Italian city of Genoa and now completes the harbors triad of national treasures with
the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The monuments unveiling will coincide with
the completion of a State of New Jersey-funded $10 million beautification project of
Liberty State Park, which included new landscaping, promenades and other facilities.
The monument will be unveiled as the centerpiece of Columbus Plaza, a
half million dollar park square project currently being designed by the CCMC along a
portion of the waterfront walkway of Liberty State Park. The park, rich in immigration
History once serving as the " bridge" from Ellis Island to the mainland
for tens of thousands of immigrants has more than three million visitors annually.
The plaza and monument, which will face Liberty and Ellis Islands, will have a
breathtaking backdrop of the New York City Skyline and a lagoon on the Hudson River.
The CCMC also launched a campaign today that will provide citizens
across the country to memorialize their immigrant ancestors on the marble base of the
Columbus monument, similar to the Immigrant Wall of Honor on Ellis Island.

Prominent officials and corporations from both states are spearheading
the CCMC;s efforts, including former Congressman John J. Cali, former New Jersey Attorney
General Robert Del Tufo, William Marino of Blue Cross, Blue Shield of New Jersey, J.
Fletcher Creamer of J. Fletcher Creamer and Sons, Inc. Joseph Panepinto of Guarini and
Guarini RBA Group, Conair Corporation, Price Waterhouse LLP, Empire State Development
Corp. Chairman Charles Gargano, NY Waterway Chairman Arthur E. Imperitore Sr., Coalition
of Italo-American Associations President William D. Fugazy, Matilda Raffa Cuomo and New
York Stock Exchange Chairman/CEO Richard Grasso.
"This is a tribute to the vision of Christopher Columbus, but it
also celebrates the immigration of all ethnic groups who helped build third nation, as
well as new immigrants the entrepreneurs building dreams and fueling the economy
just as our ancestors did," Mr. Guarini said. Added Mr. Cali, "this monument
will greatly enhance the third treasure in our harbor. All Americans will have the
opportunity to become a permanent part of history."
